Finasteride cost in 2026: generic pharmacy vs telehealth
Finasteride is one of the cheapest prescription drugs there is, yet what people pay for it ranges from about $6 to well over $100 a month. The difference is mostly where you buy it and what's bundled with it, not the pill.

What you're actually paying for
Cost Plus Drugs publishes its cost breakdown, which makes the economics easy to see. For 30 generic 1 mg tablets, the drug itself costs $0.72, the markup is $0.11, and the pharmacy labor fee is $5.00. That's $5.83 before shipping (Cost Plus Drugs: finasteride 1 mg). Cost Plus lists the retail price at other pharmacies at $70.20 for the same supply. ManyTreatments cites CMS data putting the pharmacy acquisition cost of generic finasteride 1 mg at about $0.04 per tablet (ManyTreatments: finasteride cost guide (prices checked Sep 11, 2026)).
So most of what you pay at any outlet is service: the pharmacy's fee, the prescriber's time, shipping, and with telehealth, an online consultation and ongoing messaging with a provider. Telehealth isn't overpriced by definition. It bundles the prescription, which a pharmacy doesn't. If you already have a doctor who will prescribe, a low-cost pharmacy is usually cheapest. If you don't, compare the telehealth price against your in-person visit cost, which depends on your insurance.
A year of finasteride, by outlet
Using the prices above (simple arithmetic, before tax):
- Cost Plus Drugs: $5.83 × 12 = $69.96 in drug and pharmacy fees, plus $5.25 shipping per order. If your prescription allows larger fills, you place fewer orders and pay less shipping.
- GoodRx coupon price: $14.93 × 12 = about $179, before any visit to get the prescription.
- Ro: $16 × 12 = $192 on the 12-month plan, up to $20 × 12 = $240 on the quarterly plan, with the consultation included.
- Hims: from $22 × 12 = $264. Keeps: $25 × 12 = $300 (third-party figures).
- Brand Propecia: roughly $1,580–$1,760 a year at SingleCare's average prices.
Generic finasteride has the same active ingredient as Propecia. Paying brand prices is a choice, not a requirement. Ask your prescriber or pharmacist if you're unsure.
Insurance, HSA and FSA
Ro and GoodRx both note that insurance is more likely to cover finasteride for an enlarged prostate (BPH, usually the 5 mg strength) than for hair loss (Ro: How much does finasteride cost? (updated Sep 25, 2026), GoodRx: finasteride prices (updated Aug 23, 2026)). Ro and Hims don't accept insurance. HSA and FSA rules depend on your plan administrator, so check with them before assuming a telehealth subscription qualifies.
Topical and combination products cost more
Telehealth companies also sell compounded topical sprays and serums that combine finasteride with minoxidil and other ingredients. Ro lists Ro Mane Spray at $43–$50 a month. Hims lists its "Hair Hybrids" sprays and serums from $35 and chewables from $39 a month (Ro pricing page, Hims: Hair Hybrids). Both companies state that these compounded products are not FDA-approved. They cost roughly 2× to 8× as much as generic tablets, depending on where you buy the tablets. That's not a judgment on whether they work, only on price.
What about dutasteride?
Dutasteride (brand Avodart) comes up constantly in hair loss forums. Its FDA-approved use is for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), an enlarged prostate (DailyMed: Avodart (dutasteride) prescribing information). It is not FDA-approved for hair loss in the US. Some doctors prescribe it off-label. That's a decision for a licensed clinician who knows your history, and we won't compare it to finasteride on anything except price. Sourced dutasteride prices are on our dutasteride price comparison.
Safety information is not optional reading
Finasteride 1 mg (Propecia) is FDA-approved for male pattern hair loss in men only (DailyMed: Propecia (finasteride) prescribing information). It has known side effects, and the label includes warnings for women who are or may become pregnant about handling the tablets. Read the full prescribing information and discuss it with the prescriber. A cheaper source is only a good deal if a licensed clinician has confirmed the medication is appropriate for you.
How to compare offers quickly
- Convert every offer to cost per month, including shipping and any consultation fee.
- Check whether the price needs a long prepaid plan (Ro's lowest price is the 12-month plan).
- Make sure you're comparing the same thing: generic oral tablets vs a compounded topical are different products.
- Read the cancellation terms for subscriptions.
