Minoxidil cost in 2026: topical vs oral, OTC vs telehealth

Minoxidil is sold in two very different ways: as an over-the-counter topical you can buy at Costco or on Amazon, and as a prescription pill or compounded product through telehealth. The price per month ranges from under $7 to about $40, depending mostly on the brand and the channel.

Prices checked Nov 1, 2026, and they change often. “Per month” for OTC packs divides the pack price by the months printed on the label. That's our arithmetic, not the seller's.

Topical minoxidil over the counter

5% topical minoxidil for men is sold without a prescription in the US. Store brands and Rogaine use the same active ingredient at the same strength. The difference you pay for is mostly the brand and the formula (foam vs liquid). Using the listed prices:

That's roughly a 2–2.5× premium for the brand name. Kirkland foam availability varies: it was listed as unavailable on costco.com when we checked, while a third-party tracker showed it in stock at most warehouses (WarehouseRunner: Kirkland 5% minoxidil foam, 6-month supply (Costco in-store price tracker)).

Two label details matter for cost. The FDA-approved OTC label is for the top of the scalp (vertex) and says the product isn't intended for a receding hairline or frontal baldness. The label also says continued use is needed to keep any regrowth (DailyMed: minoxidil 5% topical foam (for men) label). In other words, this is an ongoing cost, not a one-time purchase, so per-month and per-year math is the right way to compare. Read the full label warnings, including the heart-related ones, and ask a doctor before use if you have heart disease.

Telehealth topical minoxidil

Ro's FAQ lists its topical minoxidil at $0.53 a day on a quarterly plan, about $16 a month (Ro hair loss FAQ). That's close to Rogaine's price, and you get the subscription delivery and provider access that telehealth bundles. If all you want is plain OTC 5% minoxidil, a store brand is cheaper. If you want a provider involved anyway, compare the bundle.

Oral minoxidil

Oral minoxidil is a different product with a different risk profile. Minoxidil tablets are FDA-approved for severe high blood pressure, and their label carries a boxed warning about serious heart-related effects, including pericardial effusion (DailyMed: minoxidil tablets prescribing information). Low-dose oral minoxidil for hair loss is off-label, which Ro states on its pricing page (Ro pricing page). It needs a prescription and a clinician who decides whether it's appropriate and how to monitor you.

On price: Ro lists oral minoxidil at $30 a month on a quarterly plan, $27 on a 6-month plan, and $24 on a 12-month plan ($288–$360 a year). Generic minoxidil tablets are also sold through ordinary pharmacies with a prescription. Verified pharmacy and telehealth prices, normalized to cost per month, are on our minoxidil price comparison.

Compounded combination products

Telehealth brands also sell compounded products that combine minoxidil with other ingredients. Hims lists a minoxidil-plus-supplement chewable from $39 a month and topical finasteride-and-minoxidil sprays from $35. Ro lists Ro Mane Spray (finasteride, minoxidil and tretinoin) at $43–$50 (Hims: Hair Hybrids, Ro pricing page). Both companies state these compounded products are not FDA-approved. They're the most expensive way to buy minoxidil, so understand what the extra ingredients add before paying for them.

How to compare minoxidil offers

  1. Check the form and strength (5% foam, 5% liquid, oral tablet, compounded blend). They aren't interchangeable.
  2. Convert to cost per month using the supply length on the label.
  3. For subscriptions, check the plan length behind the lowest price and how to cancel.
  4. For anything prescription, the clinician's judgment comes first and price second.

Compare every option: our minoxidil price comparison lists each verified OTC, telehealth and pharmacy price, normalized to cost per month.
